PALLETS > Load Determination

Pallet load determination is calculated with the materials and force from a single direction. Down.

Unlike crates, where the load capacity must take into account the force against the six panels assembled and factor in the addition, or not, of skids (stringers) and rubbing strips. Currently there are no charts that can provide the load capacity for crates so testing companies must be used for each crate. More detail can be found in the article printed by  "Testing Crates." Wood Crate Design Manual. Vol. 252. Dept Of Agriculture. 73-74. Print.

In both, the materials selected, the hardware used for assembly, the transport method and the load balance must be considered. Pallets come in different sizes and have different weight depending on the wood. The best pallet definition is a wooden structure that holds products. The standard pallet is the most common pallet size that is used. Its size is 48 x 40. The thickness of the wood standard is 5/8. Using this wood standard for all pallets explained in the article. The weight that the pallets hold is measured in pounds. The standard pallet can hold 4,600 lbs.

Therefore, different pallets also hold different amounts. The 36 x 36 pallet can hold 4,700 lbs. In addition, the 42 x 42 pallet and the 48 x 48 pallet can hold 3,700 lbs. Below is table that shows how much pallets can hold. Keep in mind that these numbers are general., the weight capacity can change based on different species of wood, length of nail, and quantity of boards and stringers on the pallet.
